Hi, my name is Andrew Douglas.

I am a software developer by trade. I did a BSc in Computer Science back in the 1980s, and a PhD in the 1990s. My career has seen me programming in Miranda, C, C++, Standard ML, Java and lately, C#. Lately I have investigated Rust (purchased a book) and Go (did a day course as part of the Norfolk Developers Conference.) Back in the day, I did quite a bit of J2EE (JBoss) but have also written key-value stores, implemented languages and runtimes for novel concurrent/parallel computing (Linda) and compilers for functional languages. My last commercial job was for a hotel booking company, which ended in 2008, and since then I have done some contracting in the research arena (basically doing jobs full-time employees didn't want to or have time, to do.)

Here's my CV in case you're interested in hiring me.

I currently divide my time between South Northamptonshire and West Norfolk. I am looking for remote roles, full or part-time, in the C#/.NET space or AWS arena, but my experience is focused and bizarre so I would probably need some coaching. But I enjoy learning new things, am enthusiastic and willing. I have recently (February 2022) passed my AWS Certified Cloud Practioner exam, on the way to, hopefully, more certifications.

I have spent some time as a potter, since 2008, although I am not currently making. The kind of pots I make are everyday pots and pots for flowers and some larger pots for decorative effect. Mostly i am interested in atmospheric firing, so simple plain glazes fired in an atmosphere that induces different effects. My favourite is firing with wood, and I have fired many wood kilns over the years and also built a few. I also fire using a gas kiln into which I introduce sprayed soda solution, which mimics to some extent the wood effect.

Other interests include the British spider forna. I am a member of the British Arachnological Society and record the spiders I find in the garden of my old railway cottage in Norfolk. I hope to branch out this year in to recording spiders in the West Norfolk vice county. I am interested in invertebrates in general, and also do a bit of bird watching, and occassionally some botany.

I also cook, and enjoy growing food such as chillis and aubergines, tomatoes and courgettes and things that are better when eaten fresh or which are difficult to source.

I use Git Hub for all my unfinished projects. I am also on Twitter and Instagram. And more recently but less actively on Blue Sky as @andydouglas1967.bsky.social.

I can be contacted at fairtomiddlingster@gmail.com

Thank you!
